Ever have that feeling that there has to be more to life than a rat race to the top of a corporate ladder? That's something Sara knows all too well - at age 31, she made a leap of faith from a successful PR career to a LIFE as a yoga teacher and writer, simply because she was tired of the competition, stress, and "soul erosion" of her physically and mentally exhausting job. Sara is now a yoga instructor, speaker and author on a mission to bring balance and fulfillment to others on and off the mat. Thing you love most about working in wellness: By far, the most gratifying thing since my first book came out has been connecting with incredible people—who I’ve termed “seekers.” These are people who are awakened and looking for more. They aren’t content to just punch a time clock or settle. They have heard the call from deep within and they’re putting themselves out there to actively seek their best and most fulfilling lives. These are the people who are drawn to my book—and events like GOOD—and I absolutely love to connecting with them.
What you ate for breakfast this morning: My infamous winter oatmeal smoothie! Part oatmeal, almond butter, shredded coconut, banana, turmeric, cinnamon, nutmeg, and maca. 100% Yummy!
Wellness trend you can't stand: Aerobicizing yoga. Just let yoga be what it is and get your cardio elsewhere. You’re never going to get your heart rate up on the mat like you can on a treadmill, elliptical, or good old fashioned outdoors. And really, why would you want to?
Go-to item in your closet: It’s all yoga clothes at this point. Whether I’m traveling, speaking, teaching, or at home working on my next book, it’s alllll yoga clothes. I work and feel my best in super soft, uber comfortable clothes like drape-y wraps or sweaters and yoga pants.
Top tip for better sleep/ stress reduction: Realize that how you live and work during the day profoundly impacts how you sleep at night. If you’re a stress ball zooming through the day on caffeine and adrenaline, you’re probably not going to immediately drift into a restful sleep as soon as your head hits the pillow. In my workshops, I teach people to take a 24-hour, fully integrated perspective. Once you start looking at it like this, it changes everything. From there, you can start to integrate my tools, tips, and techniques for deeply restful sleep. But you have to shift your thinking first.
What inspired you write your book: I wanted to share my journey in order to inspire (and reassure!) others as they undertook theirs. I never felt like I fit in, so I created my own niche. So can you.
Advice you'd love to give your younger self (or someone ready for a serious career change): Be honest with yourself about what you really, really want…and then stay grounded in that truth. Let it be your lighthouse. Surround yourself with like-minded seekers. Approach everything interaction with a spirit of service. And allow others to help you too.
